Your gums play an important part in how your smile looks. If you are unhappy with your smile, then you may be afraid to show your teeth. When a lot of gum shows, your teeth my appear shorter and uneven. A gum lift is an option that helps you remove extra tissue and feel better about your smile.
What Causes Your Gums to Show?
This trait often runs in families. Your genetic makeup may have caused you to have smaller than normal teeth, or your adult teeth might have grown in only part of the way. This causes your gums to cover more of the crown. Your upper lip may also be shorter than average. Or, it may move up too much and reveal the extra gums.
What Other Issues Can a Gum Lift Treat?
This procedure is mostly used to correct the cosmetic issues. However, we also do them during other dental procedures. For instance, you may need to have some of the gum line removed to extend the crown of a tooth. This is done before a crown restoration is placed to add more stability.
Gum lifts are also used during cosmetic dentistry procedures. You may prefer to have your gums evened out before we place veneers on the enamel. This gives a more natural look to your smile.
What Happens During the Procedure?
Our Chandler office uses the latest equipment to make this one of the easier procedures you will experience.
Gum lifts can sometimes be done with a scalpel, but we prefer to use a CO2 soft tissue laser. With laser treatment, we can reshape your gums quickly. Lasers also seal the blood vessels so that we can usually avoid having to use sutures. This makes your recovery much faster than if we used other methods.
Is It Painful?
A laser gum lift should only cause mild pain that is similar to what you experience during other types of treatment. We can use topical anesthesia as well as other pain relief methods to keep you comfortable.
How Do I Care for My New Smile?
You will receive after care instructions before you leave the office. In most cases, you will need to be careful for the first 24 hours as you chew. Soft foods may be preferable during this time until your gums heal.
Once they have healed, you will simply need to continue to brush and floss as normal. Regular dental cleanings can also help to prevent puffiness that alters the gum line.
If excess gum tissue bothers you, or affects other types of dental treatment, then it is worth finding out if you are a candidate for a gum lift. Call our Chandler dentist office at 480-659-7800 to make an appointment for a consultation.
